Kalodromo – ‘good way’

Kalodromo which means ‘good way’ was founded by Tom von Kaenel Swiss painter and sculptor and his wife Priska in 2014. Kalodromo is a small marble manufacturer on Naxos in the blue of the Aegean.

The Workshop is nestled in the heart of Naxos. A peaceful marble wonderland, where you can sit under a shady tree in the garden surrounded by cactus, palms and oleander swapping stories and learning more about Tom’s beautiful craft.

Kalodromo is intensively dedicated to the Cycladic stone working culture - the processing of marble dates back to the 3rd millennium.

Tom designs and produces vessels, objects and sculptures in local Naxian marble, each of which is made slowly and tenderly by hand, each with a unique handwritten character. Priska takes care of the administration, social media and everything that comes up. In the workshop, she works with tools and sandpaper and puts the finishing touches on the vessels.

Tom and Priska’s relationship with Naxos goes way back to the early 2000s. Everything in this natural environment inspires and shapes Tom’s work, and his desire to bring beauty into the world is the inspiration, drive, and source for the creation of each of his works. His pieces are something truly special.

No measuring instruments are used other than compasses and scales in the production of an object, it is Tom’s eye that decides on the final shape. The vessels, objects and sculptures are kept raw, the surfaces are deliberately not polished so the traces of the craft are visible - the crystalline surfaces shimmer, giving each object a unique liveliness. They are unbelievably beautiful.

Interesting fact - in ancient times, Naxian marble was used for the roof tiles of the Acropolis in Athens and for the various kouros statues that line the sanctuaries of the Greeks.

It’s very beautiful here

‘‘The stone guides our design, which challenges us, often pushes us to our limits – but allows us to master more and more with serenity and dedication to the stone. We are convinced that this can be seen and felt when looking at and touching the vessels. This is the core and beauty of this work’’
